Hard Exudates - D/D

  • Caused by chronic localized retinal edema.

  • They develop at the junction of normal and edematous retina.

  • They are composed of lipoprotein and lipid-filled macrophages.

  • Location: Mainly OPL and INL.

  • Hyperlipidaemia may increase the likelihood of exudate formation.

HOW TO DESCRIBE THEM:

  • Waxy yellow lesions with distinctmargins arranged in clumps and/or rings at the posterior pole.

  • When leakage stops, exudates get absorbed over months, either into healthy surrounding capillaries or by phagocytosis.

  • On FFA: Seen as hypo-fluorescent.
