Ophthalmic Artery

ORIGIN

  • Branch of ICA

  • Arises from medial side of convexity of fifth bend of ICA, just after leaving root of cavernous sinus after piercing the dura

  • At it’s origin, it is medial to anterior clinoid process and inferior to optic nerve

COURSE

After origin, ophthalmic A passes through optic canal within dural sheath of O.N. → Lies inferotemporal to optic N.

At apex of orbit in muscle cone – artery pierces dural sheath & comes to lie lateral to optic N & medial to LCN & VN.

At this point – ciliary ganglion lies between ophthalmic A & LR.

Artery moves forwards & upwards

crosses over optic N & below SR

comes to lie medial to optic N [accompanied here by nasociliary N & SOV]

moves forward between MR & SO towards the maxillary process of frontal bone.

The terminal part of the artery enters the peripheral surgical space of orbit.

At medial end of upper eyelid – artery ends by dividing into 2 terminal branches:

– Dorsal Nasal A

– Supratrochlear A
