Anatomy of Ciliary Ganglion
-Peripheral parasympathetic ganglion placed in the course of the 3rd cranial nerve
LOCATION:
-Near apex of orbit between optic nerve and lateral rectus, 1cm in front of Annulus of Zinn
-On the lateral side of Ophthalmic Artery
ROOTS OF CILIARY GANGLION:
1) SENSORY ROOT:
-Comes from Nasociliary nerve
-Does not relay in Ciliary ganglion
-Passes along Short Ciliary Nerve to supply Ciliary body, Iris & Cornea
2) PARASYMPATHETIC ROOT:
-Comes from nerve to Inferior Oblique
-Contains preganglionic fibres that begin in Edinger Westphal Nucleus
-Relay in ciliary ganglion
-Post ganglionic fibres arising in the ganglion pass through short ciliary nerves and supply Sphincter pupillae & Ciliary Muscle
3) SYMPATHETIC ROOT:
-Branch from ICA
-Contains postganglionic fibres arising in superior cervical ganglion
-Does not relay in ciliary ganglion
-Passes out of ganglion through short ciliary nerves
-Supplies: Blood vessels of eyeball & Dilator pupillae
