Calcium- lipid complexes suspended throughout collagen fibrils of vitreous
Small white rounded structures - stains with alcian blue and stains for neutral fats, phospholipids, calcium
Metachromatic and birefringent
Unilateral
Obscures fundus visualisation but no visual impairment
Moves with vitreous structures and returns to original position on eye movement
Strongly and directly correlated with ageing and inversely correlated with posterior vitreous detachment
Associated with diabetes and hypercholesterolemia
Maybe associated with hypertension, hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, gout, hyperopia, alcohol consumption, RP
B scan: Moderate to high amplitude point spikes which are separated from the PVD by a clear space
No treatment necessary
