The old way of correcting Myopia!

Radial Keratotomy⁣ ⁣

Radial Keratotomy is a refractive surgery procedure to correct myopia⁣ ⁣

Developed in 1974 by Svyatoslav Fydorov⁣ ⁣

It is now obsolete and has been replaced by laser based refractive surgery procedures such as Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and LASIK⁣

⁣ Incisions:⁣ ⁣

● Series of 4-8 deep radial corneal stromal incisions in a spoke like pattern⁣ ⁣

● Starting from central optical zone (4mm) till the limbus in the mid-peripheral and peripheral cornea⁣ ⁣

● Approximately 90% of depth of the cornea⁣ ⁣

● Mid-periphery of cornea bows anteriorly, weakens paracentral and peripheral cornea and flattens the central cornea thus correcting myopia⁣ ⁣

Basic steps:⁣

⁣1) Application of anaesthesia⁣

2) Marking the visual axis⁣

3) Marking the optical zone⁣

4) Measuring the corneal thickness

5) Setting the depth of the blade⁣

6) Marking the corneal incisions ⁣ ⁣

Complications:⁣ ⁣

● Corneal perforation (micro or macro)⁣

● Incisions across visual axis - glare, astigmatism, scarring⁣

● Decentration of incisions⁣

● Overcorrection⁣

● Undercorrection⁣

● Astigmatism⁣

● Infectious keratitis⁣

● Traumatic rupture of keratotomy scars⁣ ⁣
