𝘐𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘰𝘮𝘢⁣ ⁣

  • Closure of the embryonic/optic fissure - completed by 6 weeks⁣ ⁣

  • Failure of closure of the fissure in front - formation of an iris coloboma⁣ ⁣

  • Typical : Located in the inferonasal quadrant

  • Atypical : Located elsewhere⁣

𝘛𝘺𝘱𝘦𝘴:⁣ ⁣

● Total : Whole sector of the iris upto to the ciliary body - ‘keyhole defect’⁣

● Partial : Do not involve whole sector of the iris - appears as notch at the pupillary margin⁣ ⁣

𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺:⁣ ⁣

● Complete : Whole thickness of iris⁣

● Incomplete : Either pigment epithelium or stroma are involved⁣

● Bridge : Mesectodermal tissue forms a pupillary membrane that stretches across the defect⁣ ⁣

Due to the enlarged pupillary space → inability to contract pupil properly and increased light entering the eye → sensitive to bright light/ photophobia⁣ ⁣

Can be associated with early cataract ⁣ ⁣

No treatment if it’s an isolated finding⁣ ⁣
